I am a visual artist living in the town of Qualicum Beach on beautiful Vancouver Island. I officially began my life as a full time artist in 2019 but art and creativity have always been a part of my life. I have spent the last four years studying techniques and refining my skills as a self taught artist with the goal in mind to be a full time artist and here I am doing what I love.
I was born and raised in North Vancouver, BC. Some of my earliest, and happiest memories, involve being creative painting and drawing. Time spent lying on the grass on a summers day watching clouds, or looking at the smallest details in a flower petal, or studying how light came in streams through the window and how dust particles moved freely through the air inside the channels of light. Those early observations and appreciations continue on today and are reflected in my macro photography, my compositions of flowers, and my overall detailed style and my large collection of cloud photographs.
I graduated from Capilano University and I hold a diploma in Interactive Design and spent a number of years working as a web designer/ front end developer. Being a designer has taught me many useful skills and practical and logical processes which I use today in my artistic career. I feel fortunate to have had the training and experience in this area prior to moving into my career in art.
My primary art medium of choice is watercolor. I have been using watercolor from the time I could hold a brush, it is an old friend. The way the pigment is carried by the water and the effects that can only be replicated in this medium captures my imagination every time I sit down to paint.
I use professional, artist quality watercolor pigments and 100% cotton, acid free, Arches 300lb weight and occasionally Arches 140lb weight watercolor papers. In my colored pencil work I use Prismacolor and Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils, which are also artist quality materials and which provide me with excellent saturation of color and consistent results.
I have always been fascinated with light, shadow, and the intensity of color and how each of these transforms the atmosphere from one moment to the next. I am continuously moved and humbled by my surroundings and I am fortunate to call the west coast of British Columbia my home. The proximity to the ocean and forests as well as the beautiful city of Victoria, and still a relatively close distance to Vancouver, allow me to draw inspiration from a wide area of subject matter and portray these special places in my work.
My goal in painting with watercolor is to showcase the bold, saturated, and rich color the medium is capable of. The biggest compliment for me is when the viewer says they can’t believe my work is done in watercolor.
Due to the high detail required in my style some larger works can take me months to complete. This process allows me to fully explore the nuances of my subjects, and once a work is complete I have a higher understanding and appreciation for my subject matter.
If you are local to Vancouver Island, or visiting our area, and would like to set up a time to visit my studio to view my work I welcome you to contact me by using the contact form.
Thank you, and my hope is that you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy creating it.
